Myanmar president promises to systematically transfer power

“Myanmar has many problems, from social and economic divides, to religious and ethnic ones, so this is a crucial time to bring about solidarity from all stakeholders”, the 53-year-old said.

Suu Kyi’s party has won 378 seats (19 more than magic figure of 329) in the country’s national parliament- 247 seats in lower house and 131 in the upper house, officials from the Union Election Commission said Friday, according to Radio Free Asia.

The NLD won Myanmar’s last genuinely fair election, which was held in 1990, in a landslide, claiming 392 of the 492 parliamentary seats.

The book also examines the US response to recent oppressive military regimes in Burma/Myanmar, the rise of dissident leaders within the country who struggled against these developments and the restoration of full diplomatic relations during the Obama administration. Suu Kyi was instead put under house arrest.
