Burma abandons brief plan to postpone elections

Burma has abandoned short-lived proposals to postpone a landmark election in November when Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition National League is poised for a historic victory.

Officials in the military-backed government cited widespread flooding and ethnic unrest as the reasons for suggesting a delay after summoning party representatives to a meeting in the capital Naypidaw on Tuesday morning.

Tin Aye, chairman of the Union Election Commission, raised alarms among opposition leaders when he said that the election to choose a new parliament "might be delayed".

The manoeuvre would have blocked, temporarily at least, a predicted triumph at the polls for the democracy activists of the NLD in the first elections since the end of five decades of military dictatorship.
